Did you know - Alaska has
over 34000 miles of coastline - more than all the lower 48 states
combined.
Many kinds of whitefish including cod, pollock,
sole and halibut, are abundant in Alaska. Alaska Halibut, the largest
of which can weigh up to 500 pounds, are found in water as deep as 3600
feet. Alaska fishermen, many of them second and third generation
fishing families, brave rough seas to provide more than half of all the
seafood in the United States.
Alaska is home to King, Dungeness and Snow
Crab. In fact, the largest King Crab on record - more than 6 feet from
claw to claw - was taken in Alaskan waters.
There are more than 2000 wild rivers and
streams in Alaska, which support the five distinct species of Alaska
Salmon - King, Sockeye, Coho, Chum and Pink. Because they swim free in
some of the world's purest waters, Alaska Salmon can migrate up to
10000 miles in just one year. Native Alaskans
considered the Salmon a supernatural being who magically transformed
into a fish to feed and sustain the local people.
